Service LearningWhat is Service Learning?More than simply volunteering, service-learning is a method of teaching that blends learning from the classroom with service in our community. This hands-on approach to learning enhances classroom paralegal education with real-life situations and practical application of concepts and ideas.
Information and Requirements:The paralegal student must work at least 15 hours during the semester to receive service learning credit. It will be extra credit in most paralegal classes except in the formal requirements of the 180-hour internship. Deadlines will be set by the paralegal instructor but will typically begin one week after the class starts and end one week before the class ends. The paralegal internship deadlines will be followed in the course. The paralegal student must receive approval of the site from the student’s paralegal instructor and must follow the particular paralegal class requirements and outcomes devised by the paralegal instructor. Journaling and/or a summary of the student’s journal will be the reflective activity. The journal will not be simply work hour logs but rather a time to think about what the student has seen, felt, and experienced as well as other criteria set by faculty for the service learning credit. Contact your paralegal instructor first to see if service learning is an option in your paralegal class. You, your instructor and the Paralegal Program Director will coordinate your experience. What a great way to give back to the community and learn at the same time!Service Learning Objectives:
