Internship Requirements

Paralegal Internship: PA 1189-01
 

4 Months Before starting the Internship
  1. Complete most of the required paralegal curriculum courses including Legal Research.
  2. Attend Paralegal Internship information meeting one semester prior to internship. Meetings are held in late September for Spring interns, late February for Summer interns, and late April for Fall interns. Watch for date and times on the paralegal webpage under IHCC Events.
  3. Obtain an Internship Registration Permission Card to register from the Director at the internship meeting. Registration must be complete in-person not online.
  4. Prepare resume and cover letter to use to secure an internship.
  5. Send potential supervisor a cover letter and resume with Director’s permission.
  6. Interview with potential internship site supervisor.

Course Procedures

An internship may be established in one of two ways:

  1. College-Generated - The Director of Paralegal Program maintains a listing of private law firms, government agencies, corporate legal departments, etc., who have indicated an interest in a Paralegal Program internship. The Director assists the paralegal student in choosing an internship site, if needed.
  2. Student-Generated - A student may know of or try to create an internship or find a part-time job that qualifies for internship credit.

In both the college-generated and student-generated internship, the intern has the responsibility to arrange the internship under the guidance of the Paralegal Program Director.

During the Internship
  1. Provide the Internship supervisor the following documents which are located on the Internship D2L page.
    a. Paralegal Program Degree or Certificate
        Curriculum.
    b. Role of the Internship Supervisor.
    c. List of Internship Objectives.
    d. Evaluation Form.
  2. Complete Supervisor "Thank You" form and turn it in to the Director.
  3. Provide by email the Director the student’s working schedule and classes for the semester.
  4. Work 180 hours and earn 4 credits at Internship site.
  5. Attend scheduled Paralegal Internship meetings on campus – one at the beginning and one at the end.
  6. Complete keyboarding test and computer technology assignments to evaluate competency.
  7. Set up an appointment with the supervisor, program director and intern to visit at 45 hours.
  8. Give an oral presentation to fellow paralegal interns at the end of the Internship.
  9. Complete the following Internship requirements.
    a. Updated Resume 
    b. Student Journal
    c. Position Description
    d. Final Report
    e. Evaluation Form
    f. Oral Presentation with detailed outline
    g. Online Assignments and Discussion

Confidentiality

Students are reminded that every piece of information concerning clients, whether it is written or unwritten, which comes to their attention in the course of their internship must be treated with utmost confidentiality. If this confidentiality is not observed strictly, the result will not only be extremely injurious to the client, but it may also subject the lawyer to possible disciplinary action for breach of the Rules of Professional Responsibility.
