Students may take an additional 2-4 credits of Paralegal Internship
as electives. |
| Prerequisites: |
Students must obtain the Program Director's written
permission one semester in advance of registration for the
internship. |
| Recommendations: |
It is strongly recommended that students take most
if not all of the paralegal coursework before taking the internship.
Students must have completed (PA 1110) Legal Research and (PA
1112) Legal Writing (or
are taking Legal Writing at the same time as the Internship). |
| Catalog Description: |
Gives the pre-service student practical work
experience in the paralegal area. The student should have the
opportunity to apply what is learned in the classroom to the working
world, and to develop skills and abilities that are the general
responsibility of paralegals.
Areas of focus may include familiarity
with the law office procedures, legal research, letter writing,
document drafting, client contact, familiarity with the functions
and procedures of one or more courts, agencies or other
organizations, and to see at least one transaction from start to
finish.
Students are reminded to treat the internship and its
information with utmost confidentiality. |
| Outcomes: |
Students will be able to:
- Identify and apply legal terminology and describe the operation
of the law office, governmental agency or corporation through
hands-on experience.
- Evaluate student intern’s strengths and areas in need of
improvement pertaining to legal writing and document preparation,
client contact, collection of legal information, investigation of
legal issues, and possible legal research techniques.
- Identify and illustrate parties, theories, key facts and issues
in cases as well as maintain client confidentiality, professional
responsibility and ethical standards.
- Describe and illustrate the form, style and grammar as it
pertains to legal writing.
- Describe, interpret and evaluate how an attorney conducts an
interview of a client or other individual through observation.
- Draft and rewrite letters, memoranda and selected documents as
well as collect information.

| Topics Covered: |
Participate in 180 hours (4 credits) of paralegal work
experience in a supervised legal environment. This is a web-enhanced
course that requires completion of online assignments and discuss
with fellow interns. |
| Course Objectives: |
The internship is designed to help the paralegal
student to apply what they have learned in the classroom to a
real-life paralegal job setting.

| Outcome Measures: |
- Written evaluation by the supervisor for whom
the paralegal intern works. (80%)
- Written assignments, oral presentations, and meeting attendance
relating to their paralegal work experience. (20%)
- The paralegal intern’s supervisor will evaluate each student
based on criteria supplied by the Director. All assignments required
by the Director of Paralegal program in connection with the
internship must be completed for a grade to be earned.
Grading of assignments and exams may be on a numerical basis. The
final grade will be a letter grade (A-F). |
