Introduction to IV Skills
Learn how to start an IV. Practice on IV
arms and each other. Beginners welcome!
Objectives:
- Assemble the equipment needed to perform a venipuncture.
- Perform an IV insertion using aseptic technique.
- Locate on a diagram the veins in the hand and arm that are used for IV insertions.
- Describe three ways to distend a vein prior to IV insertion:
- Tourniquet
- Gravity flow
- Hot packs
- Describe three complications of IV therapy:
- Extravasation or infiltration
- Post-infusion phlebitis
- Infection
