Objectives:

• Assemble the equipment needed to perform a venipuncture.
• Perform an IV insertion using aseptic technique.
• Locate on a diagram the veins in the hand and arm that are used for IV insertions.
• Describe three ways to distend a vein prior to IV insertion:
• Tourniquet
• Gravity flow
• Hot packs
• Describe three complications of IV therapy:
• Extravasation or infiltration
• Post-infusion phlebitis
• Infection
