The Inver Hills CC wireless network service DOES NOT PROVIDE ENCRYPTION or other security to protect your data during wireless transmission. Be sure any online services that involved the transmission of sensitive personal data provide secure socket layer (SSL) data encryption or other security measures. Web sites that provide SSL encryption have 'https' as the protocol. Don't be fooled by clever phishing schemes that mask the real URL with a supposedly safe URL. |
Getting Connected
[ A PDF version of the configuration instructions are available for printing and potentially easier reference. ]
Step 1: Turn on your wireless device and see if it works.
The default settings for many WiFi devices will just automatically find and connect to the wireless network. Make sure you wait at least one minute to give your device a chance to self-configure. If it doesn’t work, continue with steps 2 and 3.
Step 2: Configure your TCP/IP settings for DHCP.
Windows 2000 and Windows XP
- Start > Control Panel > Network Connections icon
- Right-click Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties
- Click the ‘General’ tab
- Click on ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’ in the list of items to highlight it
- Click ‘Properties’ button
- Select ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’
- Select ‘Obtain DNS server address automatically’
- Use the affirmative buttons to close and save the settings
Windows ME
- Start > Control Panel > Network icon
- Click on the ‘Configuration’ tab
- Click on ‘Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’ in the list of items to highlight it
- Click ‘Properties’ button
- Select “Server-assigned IP address”
- Select “Server-assigned name server addresses”
- Use the affirmative buttons to close and save the settings
- Restart your computer
Step 3: Manually configure the wireless connection settings.
Use the client configuration utility for your wireless card, if one was provided. Otherwise use the Microsoft Windows network connection settings.
The network SSID name is ihcc (make sure you use all lower case letters).
DO NOT enable WEP (wired equivalent privacy).
DO NOT specify a channel.
Ensure the mode is “infrastructure” or “access point (AP)”; the “ad hoc” mode will not work.
Request a new IP address if your utility program allows you to.
Step 4: RESTART your computer
Even if the operating system doesn't prompt you to restart, it is generally a good idea to restart the computer after making any network configuration settings.
