Secure FTP (File Transfer Protocol) Service
Secure FTP (SFTP) provides students, faculty and staff the means for using network folders (Z drive, J drive, web server locations, etc.) while off campus or while using the campus wireless network. Secure FTP is more desirable than regular FTP because the data (particularly usernames and passwords) are encrypted as it is passed from client to server.
Secure FTP (SFTP) Clients
There are a variety of free SFTP clients available on the Internet for Windows, Macintosh and Linux. You can use any Internet search engine and search for Secure FTP client free to retrieve a list of more options than you probably want.
WinSCP: a free SFTP client
A free client we have found and install on the computers on campus is WinSCP. It runs on computers running Windows 98 or later. It was selected because it works well, has a reasonable download size for home users without a fast Internet connection, and is free. To get the WinSCP client installer, go to http://winscp.net and follow the "download" link. We provide a quick start instructions for installing and using WinSCP with our campus SFTP service. Complete documentation is available from the WinSCP site.
