Computing Services: E-mail
Employee E-mail
The college provides all employees with an e-mail account. In most cases, accounts are created automatically when someone appears in the human resource system. Microsoft Outlook is the e-mail client application installed and configured on computers in employee offices.
Off-campus Access to E-mail
Web Access
Web access for employees is available through Outlook Web Access. Follow the Employee e-mail log-in link in the Online Inver Hills section of the college home page to use Outlook Web Access.
VPN & Terminal Server
Outlook is installed on the Terminal Server. This can be more productive than using Outlook Web Access and is worth checking out. You will likely need the assistance of the technical support group to set up an Outlook profile on Terminal Server beforehand. Send a message to Tech Support (support@inverhills.edu) to request assistance.
Using a Different E-mail Service
If you are only on campus occasionally and would prefer to receive campus e-mail at another e-mail address, send a request to Tech Support (support@inverhills.edu) using the account from which you would prefer to retrieve your messages. Listed below are a few consequences associated with not using a campus-provided e-mail account that have caused others problems that you should consider before making a request.
-
You will not be able to send messages using the campus e-mail server; you must use the e-mail server provided by your Internet service provider to send your messages.
-
Messages you send to campus recipients will be screened by the campus SPAM filter and your messages may be filtered as SPAM (filtered messages are deleted and do not reach user mailboxes) or flagged as potential SPAM (flagged messages will reach user mailboxes, but may end up in a Junk E-mail folder).
-
You will not be able to send messages to large group e-mail addresses like All, Faculty, and Staff.
E-mail address formats
The e-mail system is configured to create a few different e-mail address aliases for each e-mail account. The basic e-mail address is your network username followed by the college’s domain name (inverhills.edu).
The list below illustrates the e-mail addresses that would automatically exist for customer Jane Doe whose network username is jdoe. A message addressed using any of the following will be delivered to Jane Doe's mailbox.
-
jdoe@inverhills.mnscu.edu (initially set as the reply-to address)
-
jdoe@inverhills.edu
-
J.Doe@inverhills.edu (not case sensitive)
-
Jane.Doe@inverhills.edu (not case sensitive)
You can check at the "properties" associated with your account in the Outlook address book to see the "SMTP" addresses already configured for your account.
Your Reply-to Address
While it isn't technically necessary since any of the addresses above will deliver messages to the same location, it can be less confusing for people who exchange messages with you if your "reply-to" address is the address you show on your business cards and message signatures. If you would prefer to use one of the alternate versions shown above, send a message to Tech Support (support@inverhills.edu) and request that your "default SMTP address" be set to whatever version you want to use.
MetNet Addresses for Employees
Like students, employees may have and use an e-mail account provided by MetNet.
