Computing Services: Student Network Accounts
All students are provided with a personal campus network account. The campus network account is the key that provides access to the majority of technology services provided by the college. Student accounts are created and managed using information from the student record system. Accounts remain active as long as the student is enrolled in at least one course at Inver Hills CC.
Usernames
The assignment of usernames for a student campus network accounts is automated and that process is coordinated with METNET, the telecommunications consortium that provides free student e-mail. Usernames are assembled by appending a four digit number to the last four digits of the last name. You can discover the username assigned to your student record during the account activation process.
Passwords
Campus network account passwords must meet the following complexity rules:
- a minimum of eight (8) characters long
- include both UPPER and lower case letters
- include a non-alpha character like a number
- can't include your real name or your username
Because the campus network password rules are slightly more complex than the rules for the METNET e-mail system your campus network password can be used with your METNET account too.
Official Name Changes
If your last name changes, the first thing you need to do is work with the Enrollment Services Office to have your name change applied to your official student record. Once that is completed, you can submit a Student technical help web form and ask that your technology service accounts be updated too.
Because the process that creates account usernames incorporates a sequential number process, accounts can't be renamed. Instead, create and delete actions are required. A new account is created and the old account is deleted. In the case of the e-mail account, you will need to save any messages you want to keep to files outside of the e-mail system or they will be lost when the old account is deleted.
