SSD Home Page

    

Welcome to Student Success Day (SSD)!  One day per semester, almost all classes are changed,  8 or 9 am to 7 pm, to SSD events (exceptions).  On this day, you may meet with your teachers, attend sessions, hear a keynote speaker, and eat free.  You also may go to SSD Online anytime to find over one thousand virtual SSD sessions.  Discover how to be more successful--as a student and person--whether you are starting college, focusing on a major, or working toward a career.  The next SSD is

KEYNOTE SPEAKER 10 AM, 2 PM, & 6 PM: See below.

                

    

SSD features the following events:

  • Seeing teachers who are available in their offices, 8/9 am-7 pm

  • Finding academic/career counselors available for walk-in meetings

  • Hearing a nationally-known speaker at two keynotes and a workshop

  • Enjoying any of 50+ sessions on how to be successful in college/careers, 8/9 am-7 pm

  • Exploring club, community, and/or transfer 4-yr. college/university info tables

  • Eating free: coffee, juice, donuts, and fruit 7:30-9:30 am; cookies, lemonade, and popcorn all day; candy on many club tables; and free pizza at lunch and at supper

Keynote Speaker Feb. 26, 2008:

  

Keynote 10-11 am, FA Theater; 6-7 pm, HH 203: "Get There: Goal Setting for Success" featuring Kit Welchlin (See bio below.)

       

"Successful people know where they are going.  They set goals and invest their energy in achieving them.  Goals give you something to work for – purpose and direction to your life.  Make a strong commitment to achieve the goals you have set.  Develop a game plan for how you will use what you’re learning at Inver Hills Community College to finish what you start and guarantee success after you graduate. Learn how to set smart goals that get results.  Discover the six-step formula to finish what you start.  Find out what the thirteen new behaviors are that guarantee success." 

   

Keynoter Workshop 2-3:30 pm, HH 203: "Leadership:  It’s not just Positional; It’s Personal--Leadership through High Impact Communication"

        

"Position power is the extent to which leaders have rewards, punishments, and sanctions.  Position power comes from the organization.  Personal power is the extent to which you can gain the confidence and trust of those people that you’re attempting to influence.  It’s the cohesiveness or commitment between leaders and followers.  In this workshop, learn
            -the six criteria of personal credibility
            -the top ten characteristics of effective leaders
            -the three skills to long-term effectiveness
            -how to select appropriate situational leadership styles
            -how to take charge and grow winners."

Keynoter's Background

    

Kit Welchlin began his public speaking at the age of 9 in 4-H.  By time he was 16 he was organizing and facilitating presentations on leadership, citizenship, community service and motivation for the 4-H and the Future Farmers of America.  
       
Kit has a B.S. Degree in Speech Communication, Business Administration and Political Science.  He earned a M.A. Degree in Speech Communication and Business Administration.  He purchased his first manufacturing company at age 21, and by age 26 was C.E.O. and Chairman of the Board of three manufacturing companies in three states.  He has been an instructor with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities where he has been repeatedly nominated Outstanding Faculty.   He is a professional member of the National Speakers Association.

Exceptions

              

On SSD, almost all classes on campus are changed to SSD events.  However, a few are not.  The following meet as usual:

  
(1) Off-campus classes. 

(2) Accelerated courses.

(3) Fully-online classes. 

(4) Some technical classes requiring a preset number of training hours also may meet as usual. 

  

All other classes are changed on SSD to SSD events, and the rooms may be used for SSD purposes.  Teachers may also cancel a class earlier or later in the same week and ask you to attend SSD instead--either on campus or at the Web site  SSD Online
