The Student Mathematics League is a national competition sponsored by AMATYC, The American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. The competition consists of three exams given in the fall, winter, and early spring. This year’s exams will be given in early November, February, and April. Tests last one hour and are administered on one day during a set period. The level of the test is precalculus mathematics. Questions are from a standard syllabus in College Algebra and Trigonometry and may involve precalculus, trigonometry, analytic geometry, and probability. All the questions use a multiple-choice format or are short answer. Students are allowed to use a graphing calculator as long as the calculator doesn’t have an alphabetic keyboard or disk drive! The number of correct and incorrect answers determines scoring. Each correct answer receives two points while an incorrect response deducts ½ point. No points are deducted for unanswered questions.

Awards are given for top scores at the campus, state, and national levels both for individuals and teams (top five scores). Inver Hills is proud of our past results and look forward to competing for the top score in our state once again.

We will be having practice sessions to help prepare us for the exam and to get to know each other and eat! Please come to as many practice sessions as you can. If you have any questions, stop by Keven Dockter’s office in LA 122 or give him a call at 450-8662.
