Dr. Steven P. Hartlaub Office: Business Building 222 Office Phone: 651-450-3776 E-mail: shartla@inverhills.edu About me: I have been teaching world languages and cultures at Inver Hills Community College since Fall 2001. I teach all levels of French language, French culture (in English), and advise the French club. I am fluent in Spanish and have lived in France and Spain. I hold a B.A. in French and Economics from the University of Saint Thomas and a Ph.D. in French language and literature from the University of Iowa. I have also completed graduate work in Spanish literature.
My general approach to teaching language: . As a teacher of
language and culture, my broad aim is to provide students with the tools to
expand their own possibilities. I employ a communicative approach in my
classes and believe that students learn best when they interact with each
other in meaningful ways in the target language. I emphasize the fact that
all language occurs within a cultural context and that this context is just
as important as the structures of the language itself. I believe that
learning a new language can be a source of joy as one learns to express
oneself in new ways and gains a greater understanding of the world and its
diversity.
