FREN 1101 Beginning French I
5 credits; 3 classroom hours/week; 2 hours online/week
Introduction to basic language skills, development of listening comprehension, reading, speaking and writing skills to become proficient at the appropriate level. Introduction to French culture to develop cultural understanding and sensitivity. F

FREN 1102 Beginning French II
5 credits; 3 classroom hours/week; 2 hours online/week
A continuation of FREN 1101. Continued development of listening comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills and culture, history and art. Cultural understanding and sensitivity are important aspects of a language course. Recommended Prereq: FREN 1101. S

FREN 2201 Intermediate French I (MnTC, goal 8)
5 credits; 3 classroom hours/week; 2 hours online/week
A comprehensive review and continued development and strengthening of the four communication skills with special emphasis on communicating ideas in conversation and in writing cultural and literary materials will expand students’ knowledge of the arts, literature and history of the French-speaking peoples. Discussion of current events, oral and written reports, role play and films. Recommended Prereq: FREN 1102 or equivalent. F

FREN 2202 Intermediate French II (MnTC goal 8)
5 credits; online with meetings in a virtual classroom, flexible scheduling
A continuation of FREN 2201. Renewed emphasis is placed on communicating ideas in conversation and in writing. Study of historical and contemporary issues facing the speakers of the French language. Cultural and literary materials will deepen the students’ knowledge of and appreciation for the customs, the art, history, culture and the literature of the French speaking peoples and create an awareness of cultural, social and linguistic differences. Recommended Prereq: FREN 2201 or equivalent. S

FREN 1111 French Culture and Civilization (MnTC goals 6, 8)

3 credits; 1.5 classroom hours/week; 1.5 hours online/week

Taught completely in English. A survey of French Culture from the ancient Gauls to the present. Examines landmark events and famous people. Explores paramount achievements in art, architecture, film, literature, music, and philosophy. Introduces basic French cuisine and some common French expressions.
