Meet Milissa Troen

 

What do you like most about being a Counselor at IHCC?

I love to work with the students.  I love the variety in my day and the variety of ways that I am called upon to help students.  I love the challenge of anticipating needs, taking what is complex and making it understandable, and seeing students gain confidence and knowledge!

What classes do you teach at IHCC?

I teach CRDV 1100, Life Career Planning and also INTS 1000, On Course.  These subject areas are so much fun to teach because students and their lives are the focus!  I love it! 

What is your best career planning advice?

My best advice is: don't expect the perfect career to come to you in a dream!  Be intentional and seek out your passion in life!  The counselors can help you but they can not give it to you.  You need to work for it.....but it is worth it!!

If you could give one piece of advice to an incoming IHCC student, what would it be?

Develop time management skills, schedule your study time, and study two hours for each hour in the classroom.  You will be successful if you do it!  Also, define your priorities and realistically commit your time according to what you value. 

What was a defining moment in your professional career and how did it impact you?

During undergraduate school I led a campus organization that held biweekly campus wide events.  My mentor and would meet after each of these and ask me what went well.  Then she would always ask how it could improve or how it should be different next time.  She instilled in me that just because something was done well that to continue to be good it needs to evolve.  What a great lesson, personally and professionally!

Tell me a little known fact about you...

I have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Buddy.  I tease my kids that we needed a dog because he will always let me talk baby talk to him!  :-)

What is your favorite thing to do on a cold snow day?

Curl up on the couch with some cappuccino and read a good book to my kids or enjoy one of my own.

What is your favorite Broadway show?

Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz!  It is awesome!!
