How does ACCUPLACER work?

ACCUPLACER is administered on a computer and is very easy to use, even for prospective students with little or no computer experience. A Test Administrator will always be present to answer questions or to assist first-time computer users.

The number of questions on each test ranges from 17 to 22. The questions will appear one at a time on the computer screen. The questions are multiple-choice and all you will need to do is use the space bar on the keyboard to select the desired answer. When you have completed the question and verified your answer, a new screen will appear with your next question.

Each ACCUPLACER test is designed using adaptive techniques. Meaning that the computer automatically determines which questions are presented based on responses to prior questions. This technique "zeroes-in" on just the right questions to ask you without being too easy or too difficult. Because the test is adaptive, students will only have to answer 17 to 22 questions in each section. All questions are multiple choice and answers are selected using easy "point and click" methods. The test is also un-timed so students are able to do their very best.

Should I Study for ACCUPLACER?

A student cannot "pass" or "fail" the placement tests. To ensure that test scores accurately represent their skill levels, students however, may wish to review basic concepts in reading, grammar, arithmetic, and algebra before taking ACCUPLACER, especially if they have been away from school for more than a year. Many students find that a GED or SAT review book (available at local bookstores and public libraries) is helpful in refreshing their basic skills.

IHCC has developed a helpful math review packet that can assist you in preparing to take the Accuplacer tests. The review packet contains a number of sample questions for review of basic arithmetic and algebra concepts. To obtain a copy of the math review packet, call the Bookstore at 651-450-8533.

Some Advantages of ACCUPLACER

ACCUPLACER, unlike many pencil and paper placement tests, is untimed. This helps to eliminate the pressure and test anxiety that many students often feel. An untimed test can also be beneficial for students with learning disabilities, who often need more time than usual for testing. Students with a documented disability who require other types of accommodations may schedule a special testing session.

Using a computer simplifies the placement testing process in many ways. ACCUPLACER testing takes less time, is less stressful, and is able to give students immediate feedback because they get to see their scores on the computer screen as soon as they finish the test.
